  ۝  THE RUMOR MILL

Thursday - March 4th

Larry Brooks writes in the New York Post that the Rangers did not pursue a trade that would bring Sheldon Souray to New York.

He goes on to say that the team did look into perhaps getting Pavol Demitra, but there were no serious discussions.

Wednesday - March 3rd

Plenty of rumors flew on trade day, but ultimately the Rangers couldn't find one to pull the trigger on. Of most interest perhaps was the Fourth Period who suggested in their real time rumor blog that the Rangers were talking to the Oilers about Tom Gilbert.

In the end no trades happened, and we'll have to see if the local media can provide us any more information about possible discussions that went on.

Saturday - February 27th

The non-Olympians have been reassembling for practices over the past week, and it's almost time to once again focus on the NHL.

To that end Larry Brooks of the New York Post suggests the Rangers might look at the waiver wire and make a claim on veteran goalie Alex Auld.

Auld has been placed on re-entry waivers by the Dallas Stars and would come at a price of $500,000 to be pro-rated over the remainder of the season. That's a significant discount on Chad Johnson's $850,000 and would actually give the Rangers a little extra room to make other moves.

Friday - February 19th

Looks like P.A. Parenteau and Ilkka Heikkinen will be moving on after this year according to Steve Zipay of Newsday.

Parenteau is in his third season with the club after coming over in a trade with the Blackhawks, and finally got a chance to play with the Rangers this year. After scoring in his first game up, the 26 year old winger managed just 3 assists in his next thirteen games.

Heikkinen is reportedly looking for a one-way contract, and doesn't expect to get it from the Rangers. The 25 year old played seven games with the Rangers, registered no points and was a +2.

Tuesday - February 16th

There's more moves afoot for the Rangers according to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, though after reading his article you get the sense it's more logical deduction than any real news.

Brooks notes the Rangers have been keeping tabs on defenseman Sheldon Souray "all season", though also notes that the only way they can fit him into the picture will be if they can somehow also part with Michal Rozsival.

Which seems even less likely when you consider Souray is probably going to be out until the third week of March with a broken hand, and the Rangers are already light on the blueline.

Sunday - February 14th

The ever unreliable Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports that the Rangers may be offering Brandon Dubinsky. No word on who they might be looking for in return...

Monday - February 8th

According to Steve Zipay of Newsday, the Rangers are weighing their options on the blueline, but with little Cap space, they may be hard pressed to find much options.

Thursday - February 4th

Darren Dreger of TSN reports the Rangers are out of serious consideration for Ilya Kovalchuk, not that they were probably very serious in the first place.

With Kovalchuk set to be a UFA next season, and looking for $10-11M per season (he turned down $100M over 10 years from the Thrashers), it didn't make a lot of sense for New York.

That's not to say the Rangers and Thrashers might not make some other sort of trade. A Thrashers scout was reportedly at a recent Wolf Pack game, which suggests the two sides might be talking at some level.

Wednesday - February 3rd

The trade rumor talk is picking up, with Ilya Kovalchuk now being declared available. Kovalchuk is set to become a UFA this summer, and the Thrashers are looking for something in return.

While the Rangers will no doubt inquire as to what Atlanta might want, the general consensus appears to be that he's not a good fit in New York.

Bob MacKenzie of TSN does a fair job of breaking down why it wouldn't work...and you can add in Salary Cap issues as another reason.

Tuesday - February 2nd

Multiple reports on Twitter tonight from Darren Dreger, Larry Brooks and Steve Zipay suggest that the deal with Calgary has finally gone through.

Looks like it'll be Brandon Prust, Olli Jokinen to New York in exchange for Christopher Higgins and Ales Kotalik.
